Social search guide 2026: How to be found across platforms and AI search

People no longer start every search on Google. They search on TikTok for ideas, Reddit for honest opinions, Pinterest for inspiration, YouTube for how-tos and LinkedIn for professional advice.

Increasingly, the content on those platforms also shows up in Google results and in AI answers.

This guide explains what social search is, why it matters for your wider AI search and SEO strategy, and how to decide which platforms deserve your time. It also links to our detailed guides for each platform, so you can go deeper where it counts for your business.

What is social search?

Social search is the practice of making your brand, people and content easy to find, and easy to trust, on the platforms where your customers research. That includes search within each platform, the way platform content appears in Google, and the way it is used in AI-generated answers.

It sits within what we call search everywhere: visibility across search engines, social platforms and AI search, built on a consistent, credible presence. Our social search service helps brands improve how they are found on social platforms and build the reputation that supports that decision.

Why social search matters now

Generative AI has made research longer and more cross-platform. Before choosing a brand, people now move between search engines, social platforms and AI tools, and SEO or paid search on their own may not be enough to win the sale. Your visibility and reputation on social platforms give customers the reassurance they need to choose you.

Here are the three changes that make social platforms part of search strategy, not a separate channel:

1. Customers search on social platforms directly

Google is no longer the only place people look for information, products and services. For example, nearly 49% of consumers use TikTok as a search engine for recommendations, reviews and ideas, according to a HelloPartner study. These are people searching with intent, not scrolling passively. Social platforms are becoming places where people research and compare brands, meaning brands need to be visible wherever their customers are searching.

2. Social content appears in Google

Google often shows video results for informational queries, including TikTok content, and its results pages can include video carousels featuring TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. Since July 2025, posts from professional Instagram accounts can be indexed and appear in search (see our article on Instagram posts in Google Search). Reddit is especially visible: one study found the “Discussions and forums” feature appeared for over 70% of product-related queries, and Reddit was present 97.5% of the time when it did.

3. AI answers draw on social content

AI platforms cite social content, and the platforms they favour tend to be those with real discussion and first-hand experience. The result is that your reputation on these platforms influences what people, and AI systems, say about you. Social proof also supports the final decision to buy, which search results and ads alone rarely provide.

How social search differs from traditional SEO

The foundations are familiar: keyword research, clear and helpful content, technical set-up and measurement. The differences are in what each platform rewards.

  • Engagement carries more weight. On TikTok, completion rate and early drop-off influence ranking. On YouTube, viewer response is central to visibility. On Pinterest, saves and clicks increase distribution.
  • The unit of optimisation changes. On Instagram, each post, reel and profile works like a mini landing page. On Pinterest, you optimise the profile, boards and individual pins.
  • Metadata and spoken or on-screen content count. TikTok transcribes speech and reads on-screen text. Instagram reads reel text overlays and alt text. YouTube uses chapters, captions and descriptions.
  • Who publishes matters. On LinkedIn, individuals account for most citations on most AI platforms, so named experts are central to the strategy.
  • Each community has its own rules. Reddit’s subreddits set their own rules and moderators actively remove promotional content, so the approach is closer to community participation than to publishing.

Which social platforms matter for your business?

LinkedIn SEO

LinkedIn is a professional platform, and for B2B brands it is where social search and AI visibility overlap most clearly, being the second most-cited domain across across AI models. Public articles, newsletters and posts are all citable by AI systems. It suits commercial brands, and brands where the brand narrative matters.

TikTok SEO

TikTok is a short-form video platform driven by an interest-based algorithm, which serves content based on user behaviour and explicit interests, not just who people follow. The algorithm relies on metadata, content analysis, engagement and personalisation. TikTok transcribes speech and reads on-screen text. TikTok videos can also appear in Google’s video results. It is a long-term investment that suits B2C brands, lifestyle services, e-commerce and modern B2B businesses whose target demographic is on the platform.

Instagram SEO

Instagram is a visual platform for brand awareness, visibility and conversions, where each post, reel and profile works like a mini landing page. Since July 2025, posts from professional accounts can be indexed, so they can appear in search engines and in AI answers as well as in Instagram’s own Explore and Search. It suits visual brands, and local businesses can add their location to help people find them. Many competitors may not yet be optimising for it, which makes it a chance to stand out.

Reddit SEO

Reddit is a community platform organised into subreddits, each with its own rules and moderators. People treat it as a source of trusted answers, and most large language models appear to treat it as one too, with Reddit often heavily cited in AI answers. It suits organisations with genuine expertise that a niche community needs, and it is not right for every organisation. Reddit rewards authenticity and patience: contributions must be useful rather than promotional, and trust builds over weeks and months.

Pinterest SEO

Pinterest works as a visual search engine for planning and ideas. It matches content to searches rather than followers, so keywords matter more than follower count. It suits visual, evergreen content such as products, how-to guides, home, fashion, food and travel, and is a weaker fit for offers that are hard to show visually or bought urgently. B2B brands can test it with visual guides, checklists and templates.

YouTube SEO

YouTube is a video platform where a public video can be found in three places: on YouTube, in Google and in AI answers – in particular for help and advice content, or at the awareness stage of the user journey. Video transcripts, captions and chapters help AI systems understand context and surface relevant clips, so the work you put into each video does more than it would on a platform that is only searched in-app. It rewards putting people with real expertise on camera.

Which social search platforms should you prioritise?

You do not need to be everywhere. Spreading effort thinly across every platform usually produces weak results on all of them. Focus on the platforms where your specific audience searches, and where you can publish something genuinely useful.

  1. Start with your audience. Where do your customers look for ideas, reviews, advice or products? If you do not know, ask them, and look at where your competitors and sector are being discussed.
  2. Match the platform to your content. Pinterest suits visual and evergreen content, YouTube and TikTok suit video, Instagram suits visual brands, Reddit suits expertise that answers real questions, and LinkedIn suits commercial brands and those with a strong brand narrative.
  3. Be realistic about resources and timeframes. TikTok needs sustained video production. Reddit needs patient, non-promotional participation. LinkedIn needs named experts with time to publish.
  4. Check the fit before committing. B2C, lifestyle and e-commerce brands are a natural fit for TikTok, while modern B2B businesses can succeed there too. B2B brands can test Pinterest with visual guides, checklists and templates, but should expect modest lead generation.
  5. Pick one or two and do them properly. Add a platform when you can maintain the first ones.

If you are unsure, our social search service begins with exactly this question: where does your audience search, and what is the right level of investment?

Principles that apply on every platform

  • Research the words people use. Use search bar suggestions, platform trend tools and your usual keyword research. Social search language is more conversational than the phrases you would target on a web page.
  • Put the topic first. Lead titles, captions, descriptions and opening lines with the subject, and make each piece answer one question clearly.
  • Show real expertise. Put named people with first-hand experience in front of the audience. Our guide on how to write EEAT content explains why.
  • Describe yourself consistently. Use the same brand name, descriptions, and people’s names and job titles across every platform and your website. Consistency helps search systems and AI recognise you as one entity.
  • Connect the platforms to your website. Link between your website and your profiles, and give videos a companion page with a transcript and schema markup (see our guide to video schema).
  • Support social with earned authority. Social presence works best alongside digital PR and third-party coverage.
  • Be patient. Pinterest rewards longevity over weeks and months, TikTok is a long-term channel, and we recommend allowing at least 30 days before judging LinkedIn and AI citation results.

Metadata for social search: text, images & video

Metadata is the text that describes your content, and it is how platforms, search engines and AI systems understand what each post, image or video is about. The principle is the same everywhere: lead with the topic, use the words your audience uses, and don’t leave fields blank.

  • Titles, captions and descriptions: Put your primary keywords near the front. TikTok titles have a 90-character limit and descriptions 4,000, and YouTube descriptions can run to 5,000 characters, with the first few lines the most visible.
  • Images: Add alt text that describes the image naturally, with keywords where they fit. On Instagram, alt text is used for context, accessibility and search indexing, and leaving it blank lets Instagram generate it for you. On Pinterest, add alt text and use the description to explain any text or references in the image.
  • Video: Search engines and AI systems understand video through the text and structured data around it, so this matters most for YouTube videos and for videos embedded on your own site. Titles, descriptions, transcripts, timestamps and schema markup all help, and our video SEO guide covers each in more detail.
  • On your own website: If you embed video, schema markup gives search engines and AI systems structured information about it.

How to measure social search performance

When it comes to the bigger picture of social search, likes, comments and follower counts are only part of the story. They show how people responded in the feed, not whether your content is being found, or used as a source, beyond it. Analytics fall into two groups: on-platform data, which shows performance inside each platform, and off-platform data, which shows what happens beyond it. Off-platform is where you are most likely to judge the wider impact.

On-platform data

Each platform’s native analytics show how content performs inside the platform, such as views, reach, saves and clicks, and in some cases the search terms people used to find you. You’ll find them in:

  • Instagram Insights
  • Pinterest Analytics
  • YouTube Analytics
  • TikTok Studio
  • LinkedIn Page analytics
  • Reddit Pro

Google Search Console

As of October 2026, Google lists Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube as platforms you can add to Search Console. You verify each account as its own property. You can then see how that content performs in Google Search, including clicks, impressions, top-performing posts or videos and the queries people use to find you. Google says the feature is rolling out gradually, so it may not be available to every account yet.

Website analytics

Bring social channel data into GA4, and use UTM parameters on links so you can separate traffic by platform, campaign or post. Our data and analytics service covers GA4 set-up, reporting and dashboards.

AI citation checks

Choose the questions your audience asks, put them to AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and record which brands and sources appear, repeating monthly with the same list. AI answers vary between runs, so look at patterns over time.

We help clients go further, measuring their share of voice and citations in AI answers, comparing performance by topic and by AI platform, and showing where the gaps are. Whether AI platforms cite you, and which of your pages they cite, shows where your search presence is working and where it isn’t. Our AI visibility reporting tracks your share of AI voice, citations and most-cited URLs by topic and by platform, with monthly updates.

Need help getting visible where your audience are searching?

Social search is optimising your brand and content so it can be found on social platforms, in Google results that feature social content, and in AI-generated answers.

No. Google remains dominant overall. But customers increasingly research across several platforms, so being visible in more than one place matters.

AI platforms draw on sources that contain real discussion and first-hand expertise. LinkedIn is the second most-cited domain across ChatGPT Search, Perplexity and Google AI Mode in Semrush’s analysis, and Reddit is heavily cited, including in regulated sectors such as healthcare.

The ones where your specific audience searches and where you can publish useful content consistently. For most businesses, that means starting with one or two platforms rather than all of them.

It depends on the platform. Content from TikTok, Instagram, Reddit and YouTube can appear directly in Google results, which adds visibility. For Pinterest, we would not rely on it to lift rankings, and we would measure it as a distribution channel.

It varies by platform, but plan in weeks and months, not days. Pinterest rewards longevity, TikTok is a long-term channel, and we recommend allowing at least 30 days before judging LinkedIn and AI citation results.
