Are you making high-value strategic decisions based on unreliable data? Many website owners find themselves in a frustrating position: they are surrounded by data, dashboards, reports, and charts, yet nobody really trusts the data enough to allow it to inform business strategy. This leaves them data rich, but insight poor.
When tracking configurations are inaccurate, incomplete or misaligned with actual business goals, businesses risk allocating budget to the wrong channels, misjudging customer behaviours, or relying on vanity metrics that fail to provide useful strategic insights. At Varn, we developed our 5-step Data Journey to take businesses from data chaos to data clarity. In this first post of our 5-part series, we focus on Step 1 of our Data Journey: Audit and Align.
What is Audit & Align?
Audit and Align is the foundational first phase of the Varn Data Journey, designed to help you establish total confidence in your tracking strategy and set up before analysing the data and taking action. To give you complete confidence in your tracking foundation, Step 1 combines strategic commercial alignment with deep technical analysis. We deliver this through two core products tailored to your setup
The Data Integrity Audit
Our data engineers conduct a technical evaluation of your current measurement platforms. Whether you operate a standalone GA4 setup, GA4 with a GTM configuration, or a fully bespoke architecture, we examine every layer of your data collection. In this comprehensive audit of your existing measurement platforms, we also review consent configuration (ensuring compliant data collection), uncover tracking issues, identify gaps in data collection, and most importantly verify data integrity across all your platforms to ensure that you can fully trust the data that you collect. We provide a report of actionable recommendations to help you create a robust tracking configuration that leads to data which is accurate and complete.
The Reporting Alignment Workshop
Data only delivers value when it is used to answer core business questions. In this structured, interactive workshop, we help you to get aligned on the metrics that matter most to your commercial growth and establish how to capture them in future reporting. We discuss your requirements, challenges and primary business goals, to help ensure that every metric you track (and report on) directly answers the core commercial questions driving your growth. Following the workshop, we create Clear documentation outlining your aligned KPIs alongside a strategic reporting plan to monitor them effectively.
Together, Step 1: Audit and Align replaces assumption with certainty, transforming unverified, uncategorised numbers into a reliable foundation of data you can trust.
Why is data integrity so important?
It is always tempting to jump straight into building fresh dashboards to answer your questions or setting up new tracking tags in the hope that more tracking means better visibility. However, adding new layers of tags on top of broken or incomplete tracking, simply leads to misleading insights and untrustworthy analysis that could misdirect your entire strategy. The insight you can obtain from data is only as good as the data itself.
Common tracking issues an audit uncovers
In almost every tracking audit our data team conducts, our data specialists uncover at least one of these silent tracking failures that skew performance metrics without the business realising it. These common issues include:
- Duplicate conversion events: Tags firing twice on single actions, painting an artificially optimistic picture of your sales or lead data.
- Broken cross-domain tracking: Disconnected attribution when users navigate to third-party tools (like booking engines or payment gateways), making it impossible to evaluate true channel ROI.
- Consent management errors: Misconfigured consent banners that either silently drop compliant data or risk failing ethical privacy standards.
- Unfiltered internal activity: Staff, developer and agency traffic artificially skewing conversion rates and user behavior trends.
By systematically identifying and resolving these tracking gaps, we ensure that the dashboards you review moving forward reflect genuine business performance, giving you the clarity to make strategic decisions based on facts, not fiction.
Build your data foundation with confidence
Data should give your team confidence in informing decision making, but this can only happen when you are sure of the accuracy of your collected data. By establishing a strong tracking foundation, you ensure that every future report, analysis, and strategic pivot is backed by data you can genuinely trust.
Check out the short video clip below, where we introduce Step 1 of the Varn Data Journey:
Are you making high-value decisions based on data you can't fully trust?
Most businesses aren't short on data. Dashboards, reports, and tracking tools generate more numbers than most teams can act on, and that volume can be mistaken for insight; the real issue is usually further back. Before any new tracking or reporting goes live, the existing setup needs to be checked, because decisions built on flawed or incomplete data carry that flaw forward into every strategy they inform. In this video, Varn Data Analytics Manager Katie New walks through step one of our five step data journey: Audit & align. This is the foundation stage, where we assess the integrity of your current tracking, identify any gaps, and make sure what you're measuring actually maps to the commercial questions your business needs answered.
